Textile Design: Embroidery

In 2021, I embarked on a transformative journey across Iran, collaborating with talented rural women to revive their age-old embroidery techniques. Inspired by the captivating stories, motifs, and forms found in their enchanting surroundings, I worked closely with these women to create unique pieces of art. Not only did this collaboration empower these artisans economically, but it also served as a modernization of their cherished craft, breathing new life into a rich heritage.

The Designs

The rural women skillfully embroidered these pieces to showcase their expertise and adorn their homes during significant life events such as weddings. These intricate creations also held significance for special occasions like the birth of a child, incorporating motifs, texts, and designs inspired by folklore stories and elements. Recognizing the cultural and emotional value of these artworks, I embarked on a collaboration with the women, crafting designs that evoke themes of love and storytelling. Together, we selected mainly cushions as the canvas for our creations (there are also a few placemats as well)—a symbol of intimacy and shared moments for both children's bedtime and romantic connections. Each piece was thoughtfully crafted to spark conversations and serve as a meaningful centerpiece.
